The Second ‘Guangdong ICH@Schools’ Series: Dongtou Blue - Hakka Traditional Dyeing and Weaving Workshop
Date: 07/11/2024
The art of Dongtou Blue, a unique traditional craft of weaving and dyeing, remains one of the last surviving forms in the Hakka region of Guangdong. This craft employs natural plant-based dyes and is produced through intricate processes, showcasing not only the exquisite nature of traditional craftsmanship but also embodying profound cultural significance. The "Dongtou Blue: Hakka Traditional Dyeing and Weaving Workshop," organized by the Federation of Hong Kong Guangdong Community Organisations in collaboration with the General Association of Hong Kong Heyuan Societies and the Hong Kong Community and Construction Association, provided students from our school with the opportunity to create their own indigo-dyed works, allowing them to experience the distinct charm of this ancient skill.
The event was supported by Wong King, chairman of the Association of Hong Kong Heyuan Society and member of the Sha Tin District Council. During the workshop, representatives of intangible cultural heritage and professional fashion designers meticulously explained and demonstrated the techniques. The students were highly engaged, diligently immersing the fabric and patiently waiting for the color transformation, witnessing the metamorphosis of plain white fabric into unique indigo-dyed creations. The students expressed their delight upon unveiling their works, and the entire workshop was filled with laughter and joy, as this century-old craft vibrantly thrived in the hands of the new generation.
